The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Command, has urged motorists to adopt compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative energy source to improve fuel management and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun State, Mr. Anthony Uga, made this recommendation during a zonal sensitization event on Friday at Bezer Hotel in Ota. Uga emphasized that CNG could significantly help address ozone layer depletion globally.
He highlighted the negative impact of continuous fossil fuel burning on global warming, noting that fossil fuel emissions contribute to 21 percent of global carbon emissions, particularly from trucks and articulated vehicles.
“The purpose of this sensitization exercise is to raise awareness among motorists and stakeholders about the benefits of CNG and encourage its adoption,” Uga stated.
Uga also pointed out that CNG is not only more economical but also environmentally friendly. He advocated for non-motorized transportation options like cycling, which can promote good health.
The Commissioner for Transportation in the state, Mr. Gbenga Dairo, praised the FRSC’s initiative to educate the public on reducing carbon emissions. Represented by Mr. Hassan Bamidele, Dairo mentioned that Governor Dapo Abiodun had procured CNG buses for public use and revealed plans for a public-private partnership to develop e-mobile programs and e-stations to further address carbon emissions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that facilitators from Green Fuel Limited, Messrs Harikrishnan Perumal and Bolaji Oyedeko, demonstrated the safety advantages of CNG in the event of an explosion. They expressed their company's willingness to collaborate with organizations interested in establishing CNG stations.
In his remarks, Vehicles Inspection Zonal Commander for Ota, Mr. Oluwatoyin Olugbenga, urged stakeholders to utilize the information provided and support the initiative due to its numerous benefits and the global effort to reduce fossil fuel emissions.
Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, supported the advocacy for alternative energy solutions to combat global warming. Represented by Dominic Azo, Adebayo called for affordable CNG options and greater public engagement with the initiative.
