The outgoing Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has identified the gap between the executive arm of his government, the state workforce, and his political appointees as some of the factors responsible for his hampering his performance in office for eight years.
According to him, members of his executive, the state workforce, and his political appointees, in most cases, worked in isolation due to wrong advice
He stated this in Minna at the inaugural lecture organized by the state government as part of the lined-up events for him to hand over power to the next governor, come May 29.2023.
The outgoing governor also lamented that Ministries, Departments, and Agencies under his administration could not implement the policies and programs of his administration.
Bello, who also said that he regretted taken some wrong decisions during his two terms in office, advised his successor, Umar Bago, to select people with impeccable character and competency, as commissioners and political aides would advise him "rightly, politely, and stand by him, no matter the situation."
The Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party(NNPP) and former Governor of Kano State, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in his speech at the occasion, said that some governors failed in office because they wasted quality time concentrating on policies and programs that had no direct bearing on the socioeconomic well-being of the citizenry.
Kwankwodo, who was the chairman of the occasion, noted that lack of competence, and knowledge of what to do after getting power also accounted for the failure of some Governors, adding that they usually claim to know it all.
He added that at the end of their tenure, these governors end up scampering for what they did in their states or constituencies after four or eight years in office.
Kwankwaso, therefore, advised Governors-elect to shun stealing, siphoning of public funds, and a non-transparent way of running a government and learn from past mistakes of some politicians and leaders whom he said were now living in regrets.
Kwankwaso also called on the elected governors to build human capacity through education and embark on socio-economic empowerment of the people, pointing out that these were parts of his successes as a two-term governor in Kano state.
