May day: Shun "must-win-adventure", kogi workers urge politicians.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Kogi State Council, has urged politicians, especially those in the state, to shun a " must-win-adventure, as the process towards the state 2023 is on course.



The Chairman of the state council, Comrade Gabriel Amari, gave the advice on Monday in his speech at the 2023 May Day (Workers'Day) celebration at General Muhammadu Buhari Square, Lokoja.


He said:" Electíoneering campaigns are avenues for candidates to market their programmes and showcase their abilities to lead the people, therefore, politicians and their supporters must imbibe the culture of tolerance and respect for the rule of law."


He stressed that Nigerians expect INEC to conduct a credible electíon in Kogi State to help build a better image for them.


Amari called on the workers to come out en masse to vote for the candidate who can deliver good governance and provide enabling business environment.


He, however, reiterated the non partisan status of the Union, adding that NLC remains a strong advocate of free and fair electíons.


Historically, May Day, other wise knowns ad International Workers'Day is intended to honour workers sentenced to death following the 1876 Haymarket square Riot in Chicago, Illinois, USA which was first marked in Nigeria in 1980.

Various labour unions in the state, including members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Kogi State Council conducted match pass at the occasion.


On Workers'welfare,the NLC boss in the state who commended the governor for the execution of several high- impact projects and reposition of the education sector however called on him to look into the plight of teachers.


He reminded Bello that over 50 percent of teachers are either retired or been laid off by the screening exercises, while others died, adding that the narrative needed to be changed.


The organised labour also called on the state government to address the issues bordering on weigh-in-allowance for all media workers,the 27.5 per cent teachers specific allowance for primary and secondary school teachers,full implementation of COHESS salary structure for all health workers and payment of the 2018 balance of the three months percentage for state workers.


On security,Amari notes that it is disheartening to realise that despite all the efforts of the present administration in the state in the area of insecurity,, there are still security infractions in the state, citing the recent Akolo Ogane-Enugu communal in Dekina Local Governnent Area of the state.



Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government,Dr. Folashade Ayo Ade Arike, Governor Yahaya Bello commended the state workers for their cooperation  towards the success of his administration and the development of the state, irrespective of religious and other affiliations.

The governor,who expressed the commitment of the state government to better the welfare of the workers, urged them to be hard working in the course of their job to the state and described them as key to the success of the New Direction Agenda of his administration.

The theme of the 2023 celebration is "Workers' Rights and Social Econimic Justice."
