The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger state Council, has trained some members on Solutions Journalism as part of efforts to expose journalists to new trends and opportunities in the profession.

The coordinator/trainer, who is also the Deputy Editor-in-Chief, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Alhaji. Ismail Abdulaziz, told participants that Solutions Journalism offered new opportunities for practitioners that could not be ignored.

Abdulaziz also told the practitioners at the IBB Pen House, Minna on Saturday that the one-day training that solutions journalism is another opportunity for them to sharpen their skills and open up new frontiers in the practice.

Abdulaziz said, "With Solutions Journalism, many practitioners not only get sponsors for stories, centred towards solving problems but also attract more monies for themselves besides being exposed to improved writing skills and researches.

"As much as it attracts ‘good pay’,Solutions journalism is rigorous, because it involves research and fact- based reportage to meet the expectations of the sponsors”.

“Solutions Journalism is more about reports, based on facts and thorough research work to bring about possible solutions on the actions or decisions taken by both state and non-state actors to social problems directly or indirectly affecting the lives of the ordinary people”.

“It is a satisfying new initiative for journalists, because it make the news interesting to readers and subscribers who are tired of hearing and reading about problems based reports only.

“One important aspect of Solutions Journalism is that, it presents more of impact/relevance of the solutions being brought to the fore by reporters and as well trying to explain the limitations and/or challenges encountered providing the solutions.

"One obvious fact that must be put into consideration by any practitioner wanting to delve into Solutions Journalism is that, he or she must have a good working knowledge of the journalism profession.

"It entails more of writing to expose solutions to problems that may have been solved over  time by; individuals, NGOs, CSOs and as all three tiers of governments, meaning that there is the need for you to have a look at what your research will centre on.

Solutions Journalism also allows you to make comparative research and analysis on solutions provided to a challenge from another part of the clime that is similar to that of yours at local government, state and at the federal level.

AbdulAziz, who is also the Head, Solutions Journalism Desk NAN assured that Journalists who ventured into the new specialty stands the chance of getting funds for their works for focusing on solutions that may have been provided by; individuals, NGOs, CSOs governments at all levels.

" He/she can report on how a problem is solved somewhere and such reports can as well be re-broadcasted in different news outlets across the world.

“In the course of practicing Solutions Journalism, a journalist who is expected not to compromise the ethics of the profession targets his/her reports to expose the rudiments of making all three tiers of governments accountable to the entire citizenry," he added.99

In a remark, the Council Secretary, Comrade Usman Chiji, who is also one of the beneficiaries of the training commended Ismail Abdulaziz for the show of comradeship, extending the new journalism trend to Niger state.
