Residents of Lokoja, capital of Confluence Kogi State,have called on the state government to speed the repair of Greater Lokoja water works,to safe them the trauma of scarcity of potable water and health hazard.
They made the call on Saturday at the State Water Board,pata area, where most residents now queue for drinkable water for domestic and commercial activities.
The Correspondent of The Reporters recalls that the Greater Lokoja water Works was submerged in October 2022, following the flood that devasitated structures in Lokoja and other local government areas in the state and other states of the federation.
Speaking with the Journalists on the issue about two weeks ago in Lokoja, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr. AbdulMumini Danga, disclosed that work had reached 70 per cent completion in the repair of the water treatment plant at the Greater Lokoja Water Woks.
According to him, the Governor of the state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has approved the proposal he sent to him for the purchase of new transformer to activate the water plant being repaired , adding that with the approval while serious efforts were on to purchase one.
However, a title holder,The Adomuha of Anebira of Lokoja, Mal Abubakar Maiyaki, called on the state government to partner with the World Bank on water and sanitation unit to take loan facility to assist in ending the water scarcity in the state as a whole.
Maiyaki,who is also a Comrade said though the state had tried in the area of youth and women empowerment, health sector and security among others, time had come for the state government to find lasting solution to water challenges facing the people.
He described water project as an expensive investment which needs to be supported by the World Bank and other donor agencies to make it a reality.
Meanwhile,as the scarcity of potable water continued on Saturday, residents from many quarters in Lokoja and its environs,such as Gadumo, Ganaja, old Poly quarters, angua madabo,anguanza, anguansariki anguayashi, cantonment quarters,karaworo,kabawa, elete among others have trooping to Lokoja Water Board, pata area to queue for water on a daily basis.
